NEIL DIAMONDS BACKGROUND:
Born in 1941, Neil Diamond was raised in Brooklyn New York by a Jewish family, descendants of Russian and Polish immigrants. Spending his childhood all around different neighborhoods of Brooklyn, Diamond was an athlete who became very successful in College in fencing. But, although he was a good student and athlete, he had a natural talent as a song writer and started early writing songs as a senior at New York University. Diamond not only wrote songs, but he also performed as well. His first stint as a performer was not as a solo performer though. He started off as a duo with his friend Jack Parker. Their duo was simply titled ‘Neil and Jack’. They released their first singles in 1962, but with no success, or not as much as they anticipated. Neil would find more success as a song writer in the early 1960’s. His written songs such as ‘Sunday and Me’ performed by Jay and the Americans and Diamond also wrote a handful of hits for the world famous MONKEES. Songs such A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You, ‘Love to Love’ and the iconic hit ‘I’m a Believer’!
In 1966, Diamond released his first single as a solo artist with the song ‘Solitary Man’. The single was followed by ‘Cherry, Cherry’ and ‘Kentucky Woman’. The late 1960’s were a tough time for Neil as he was not happy with his music and record label, and after a few lawsuits and struggles, Diamond finally found a solid style in 1969, with more mellow tunes such as ‘Holy, Holly’, ‘Cracklin’ Rosie’ and ‘Sweet Caroline’. The songs were hits, and Sweet Caroline was his biggest hit and brought him out of his slump. Transitioning into the 1970’s became a great time for Neil Diamond! Diamond moved to Los Angeles and released hit after hit and sold out every Venue he played at. He played ten sold out shows at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles in 1972, one show became a hit album. The 70’s also became a time of hit singles following his 1969 success. Songs such as ‘I Am… I Said..’ ‘Red, Red Wine’, Song Sung Blue’, ‘You Don’t Bring Me Flowers’ and ‘I’m Glad You’re Here With Me Tonight’. The 1980’s transitioned Diamond into film as well. Diamond starred alongside actor great Laurence Oliver in the remake of The Jazz Singer. Although he received a Razzie award for worst actor, the soundtrack featuring his music was a success, which released his hit single ‘America.’ The song became the theme for the Presidential Campaign for Michael Dukakis and in 1987 Diamond even sang the National Anthem!
The 1990’s, thirty years after Neil started, continued to bring on the legacy of Neil. While he continued to release music and play live, Diamond’s music carried onto the main stream. His music was used in movies all throughout cinema. His songs were covered by artists such as Urge Over Kill, UB40 and Smashmouth! In July of 2014, Diamond released his All-Time Greatest Hits compilation album which reached the top 200 Billboard Charts at #15.
