The New York Yankees

2017 | Written by David Brodeur

The New York Yankees said goodbye to veteran and long time Yankee 1B Mark Teixeria in the off season when he chose to test the free agent market so they signed veteran 1B Chris Davis to replace him. The team was busy making a number of off season transactions who could make an impact for the Yankees. They traded C Brian McCann to the Houston Astros for RHP Albert Abreu and another RHP Jorge Guzman both of whom will be likely members of the starting rotation in 2017. The team also signed free agent DH Matt Holiday who will be looked upon for some added power to the lineup. The player who will have the greatest impact in 2017 was free agent signed Aroldis Chapman who was instrumental to the Chicago Cubs in winning the World Series last season. The Cubs knew he was a rental player who would demand big money in free agency and the Yankees were realistically one of only a handful of teams who could afford to sign Chapman. He is arguably the best closer in the league although the Dodgers and their fans would certainly dispute that with Hanley Jansen getting their votes for best closer in the majors. The remainder of the Yankee staff consists of Japanese sensation Masahiro Tanaka who had 31 starts with a 14-4 record and a 3.07 ERA. He is the most likely opening day starter and # 1 man in the rotation. Michael Pineda and longtime Yankee C.C.Sabathia will fight for spots in the rotation after both come off of sub par 2016 performances, although they did have 32 and 30 starts respectively. 23 year old RH Luis Severino started only 11 games in 2016 and was mostly ineffective but at only 23 there is plenty of room for upside improvement. RH Adam Warren finished last season with a 7-4 mark but must find a way to lower his 4.68 ERA. He will be one of the pitchers who vie for the # 5 spot in the rotation. The bullpen belongs to Chapman but with a lot of uncertainty among the starters getting Chapman into games where he has the chance to do what he does will not be easily done night in and night out. LH Dietrich Enns has been a pleasant surprise so far in spring training throwing only 4 innings though but producing an impressive 0.75 WHIP. He will likely be the first LH out of the pen. While the bullpen is deep the team needs to find the right setup man for Chapman to reach his peak and justify his huge dollar contract. The pinstripes are always a big fan draw all around the league and you can see your Yankees vs. any team with no fee tickets from Captain Ticket.

Free agent signing  DH Matt Carpenter has already shown his power, hitting several HR's in spring training and will be a big boost if he can carry that form into the regular season. Veteran Jacoby Ellsbury is back for another year in CF and has been tearing the cover off the ball in spring training so far. With an OB% of .330 and 20 SB's in 2016 he's an asset for manager Joe Girardi at or near the top of the lineup. The giant Aaron Judge qualifies as a rookie after getting called up late last season the 6' 7" 275lb. Judge only had 84 AB's but RF is his to lose going to spring training and so far the results have been mixed. He will need to improve to hold down RF. LH Brett Gardner has been a Yankee since 2008 and looks to have the LF job for another season. The middle infield will feature the left handed hitting Didi Gregorius who slugged 20 HR's and drove in 70 runs in 2016 and will be teamed with 2B Starlin Castro who posted almost identical numbers as his mate in 2016 with 21 HR's and 70 RBI's. Left handed hitting 24 year old rookie Greg Bird will be competing with off season signing Chris Carter for the 1B job. Bird impressed when called up for limited time late in the 2016 season. The catcher position is now a wide open competition with the trading of regular starter Brian McCann and there are 3 players hoping to take over behind the plate. The Yankees are always competitive regardless of the lineup on the field simply because pinstripe pride raises the level of effort from every player wearing the uniform.
