The Philadelphia Phillies

2017 | Written by David Brodeur

The 2017 Philadelphia Phillies will approach the season looking to continue the youth movement that they have been under for several seasons now and are hoping the young prospects begin to pay off and validate the organization's philosophy to build from within by strengthening their minor league system. Though playing in what is considered a major television market in the league, ownership has never been a big spender in the free agent market and often times the talent they develop in the minors leaves once established in the majors to sign big contracts with other team's willing to pay market value or higher. One move the team made during the off season was trading RF Joey Curletta to the Seattle Mariners for RHP Pat Venditte. They have 3 minor league prospects who are given a very good chance of making the major league squad. SS J.P. Crawford, OF Nick Williams and C Jorge Alfaro. With no established stars outside of Howie Kendrick LF the opportunity for young prospects cracking the starting lineup is there for the taking. Will any or all of them make the difficult leap from triple A to being a regular, everyday player in the majors is a question the Phillies will have to wait for an answer on. 3 of their 4 infielders are 25 or under and all had promising 2016's but the need for each of them to increase their overall production is a necessity if the team wants to be competitive. The long 162 game season always tests young players and the last six weeks of the season is where the prospects show their true mettle. Tickets for all games are just a phone call away when you depend on Captain Ticket to put you in the best seats for the best prices.

The Phillies pitching staff is much like the rest of the roster, filled with no real established stars but an abundance of potential major league talent. Jeremy Hellickson is the most likely opening day starter coming off a 2016 where he was 12-10 with a 3.71 ERA over 32 starts and a respectable 1.15 WHIP. Off season trade acquisition RH Clay Buchholz is hoping the switch to the NL from the AL's Boston Red Sox will provide renewed success as his 2016 saw his numbers drop of significantly.RH Jerad Eickoff was a workhorse starting 33 games but was only 11-14 with an ERA of 3.65. Pitchers like Hellickson and Eickoff are critical to the team as they are capable of 30+ starts and near 200 innings each season, barring injury and time spent on the DL. Third year RH Aaron Nola is only 23 years old and is one of the hopeful prospects the team is counting on having upside to be realized? Another pitching prospect who had some success during a late season call up is RH Alec Asher who could battle for the # 5 spot in the rotation? He will likely find his competition in RH Vince Velasquez who started 24 games in 2016 with modest results. One glaring hole and weakness the Phillies have going into 2017 is the absence of a left handed starter. The bullpen is anchored by closer Jeanmar Gomez who notched 37 saves in 2016. Joaquin Benoit was a success as the setup man last season and is Gomez' back up should he falter as the closer. Joely Rodriguez is the lone LH pitcher of the entire staff and is only 25. He was up with the team late last year and showed impressive stuff and figures to earn a spot in the bullpen in 2017. Catching this staff will be Cameron Rupp who threw out 17 runners in 2016 while being a good game caller and framer. Captain Ticket is the only source for the best Phillies ticket prices.
