The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

2017 | Written by David Brodeur

2016 was a big disappointment for the Los Angeles Angels and their fans who are both looking for a big turnaround in 2017. The biggest plus for the Angels is that they still have the BEST player in the majors in Mike Trout who they will be heavily leaning on to return the club back into contending for the AL West crown. Trout is a true 5 star player who won rookie of the year, is a 5 time all star with 2 game MVPs,  2 AL MVP awards and is a 5 time silver slugger award winner. Only starting his 7th year in the majors Trout already has 917 hits and 168 HR's a career batting average of .306, .405 OB%, 497 RBI's and 143 SB's!! If he stays healthy and wants to play 15+ seasons? he could find his name all over the major league record book!! Watching Trout play at the stadium is truly a treat and fans should take advantage of the fact the Angels have this guy for now and call Captain Ticket for the best seats in the house.

The off season saw one of their best starting pitchers sign with another team via free agency when Jerred Weaver signed a big dollar contract with the San Diego Padres. Weaver had been the # 1 starter for many seasons and was always the opening day starter. Though he had battled injury the past two seasons when he was healthy he was one tough pitcher and he will be missed. Closer Huston Street strained a lat muscle early in the week and will not throw for 3-4 weeks. DH Albert Pujols is just starting to run and take infield after offseason foot surgery. The Angels did acquire 2B Danny Espinosa from Washington and he will form one of the best double play combos in the league with Andrelton Simmons at SS. Espinosa is a local boy from nearby Santa Ana. Also acquired in the off season from the Detroit Tigers is CF Cameron Maybin who will provide speed on the bases for manager Mike Scioscia to manufacture runs with. GM Billy Eppler has been focusing on building depth since the trade deadline of last season and the roster turnover is too big to list them all but suffice to say the Angels have a very deep team now in all positions and if they can field the right combination, along with Trout and Pujols, this team will surprise people and surely contend for a playoff spot. You will definitely want to be a part of the revival of the Angels.

Though it has been widely held that the Angels have one of the worst farm systems in the league they have as many as 30 minor league prospects who are expected to make their major league debut sometime during the 2017 season! If this prediction comes true, and the prospects can make a contribution, this team will be one fun group to cheer for!! The outfield is very solid with Trout, Maybin and Kole Calhoun who is ready for a breakout season and an infield that is rock solid up the middle and strong on the corners, so the pitching staff will be able to pitch with confidence having one of the best overall defenses in the league behind them. Grant Richards will be the # 1 starter and the team is hoping Tyler Skaggs will remain injury free to hold down the # 2 spot with veteran Matt Shoemaker and Ricky Nolasco filling the number 3 & 4 spots. Other than the injured Street the bullpen has no stars but is very deep and capable of putting the team in position to win a lot more than 2016's dismal 74 wins. Captain Ticket has the best locations for you to see the 2017 Angels and join in on the fun!!

The Angels have been based in the Southern California area since 1961. Just moved outside of Los Angeles in the Orange County area, they have represented the Los Angeles fan base along with their cross town rivals, the Dodgers. Established in 1961, they played one year at Wrigley Field. ( Not the Chicago based field, but owned by the same person.) They also shared home field with the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chavez Ravine until 1965. In 1966, the Angels moved into their own stadium, Anaheim Stadium in the city of Anaheim. Based in Orange County, right next to Disneyland, owner Gene Autry changed the team name to the California Angeles. The Angels had a slow start to baseball, never finding any success until 1979 in which they won their division, a difficult task in baseball for only four teams advanced during the early era of baseball.

With hall of fame Second Baseman Bobby Grich, the Angels began to see some success. One of the most memorable seasons would be when they almost advanced to the World Series against the Boston Red Sox. The Halos were loaded with talented players such as Wally Joyner, Dick Schofield, Reggie Jackson, Don Sutton, and Bobby Grich in his last season. Blowing a game six win, the Angels were so close to advancing to their first World Series. After 1986, the Angels would struggle. Although, they had lots of talent like Wally Joyner, a smart hitting first baseman, catcher Lance Parish, and their 1991 season featured a dangerous pitching rotation with Chuck Finley, Mark Langston and fan favorite Jim Abbot.

The 2002 baseball season would be a historical on in which the Los Angeles Angels arrived to the playoffs as a wildcard placing and moved onto the World Series, where they defeated Barry Bonds and the San Francisco Giants. With All Star sluggers Garrett Anderson and Troy Glaus, supported by a great role playing line up with Darrin Ersted, David Eckstein, and Adam Kennedy, the Angels slugged their way passed the San Francisco Giants… highlighted by an amazing rally in game six. The Angels comeback was highlighted by the infamous ‘rally monkey’. After the great comeback in game six, Ace pitcher John Lackey and all star closer Troy Percival would close it out in game seven with a 4-1 lead. Their first world series would cement Mike Scioscia as a long time Manager. The Angels later made six more postseasons after their championship season, leaving them as an MLB powerhouse. Their reign continues to this day, so grab Angels’ tickets and watch one of the greatest franchises in baseball for the past fifteen years!

Get out the rally monkey and cheer on your Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Mike Trout is the hottest bat in baseball and he's a true Angels and MLB hero. Pujols is not too shabby for a second bat. Jared Weaver is an Angel great and Garrett Richards looks to continue his all star caliber pitching! There’s nothing like heading out to Anaheim, just down the street from Disneyland to watch southern California’s favorite team.

The Angels loyal MLB fan base starts off in the parking lot, with lots of clean fun and tailgating. Then they take the Stadium waving their red and white towels and cheering on their Angels as they dominate the field! The Angels are in the most exciting division of the MLB. Playing most of their games against the always competitive Oakland Athletics, the increasingly improved Robinson Cano led Seattle Mariners, the always hard hitting Texas Rangers, and the up and coming Houston Astros, who recently relocated to the American League and look to compete with their new young roster! Fans are lining up to cheer on the Los Angeles Angels who look to repeat their magical season of last year, but with a much better climax!

Walt Disney was the minority owner of the California Angels before they became core owners in 1997. And Disney production included the Anaheim based team as the central focus in their 1994 family film Angels in the Outfield. The film starred a young Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the lead role. A foster child who prays for the Angels to win the pennant hoping that it will reunite him with his father. Although, the Angels were used in the 1994 remake, they were not used in the original film. The Pirates were the team used in the original version, due to the fact that the Angels did not exist as a Major League ball club in the 1950’s.
