The Toronto Blue Jays

2017 | Written by David Brodeur

The Toronto Blue Jays lost a number of players who elected free agency in the off season. Fortunately for the team they were able to resign RF Jose Bautista after he initially decided to test the free agent market but found few teams were showing interest and the Blue Jays offer turned out to be his offer. The biggest loss they suffered was the loss of DH Edwin Encarnacion who slugged 42 HR’s and drove in 127 runs in 2016. Replacing those type offensive numbers will be near impossible which makes the resigning of Bautista that much more critical for the Jays. The Blue Jays signed 1B Steve Pearce in free agency after playing for both the Baltimore Orioles and the Tampa Bay Rays in 2016 and could be used as a DH as well. They also picked up two pitchers as free agents RH Joe Smith and LH J.P. Howell, both veteran starters who will give the team a lot of innings and starts in 2017. The final free agent signing who should contribute to the offense was Kendrys Morales who will DH and has the huge shoes of Encarnacion’s to try and fill. With the Jays still a team who will score runs a ton they will provide fans with plenty of excitement and you will want to be part of the it by calling Captain Ticket for the best value priced seats with no fees added.

The Jays still have plenty of offensive firepower starting with 3B Josh Donaldson who comes off a 2016 that saw him hit .284, 37 HR’s and 97 RBI’s and carried an impressive OB% of .404. SS Troy Tulowitzki looks to get back to having production numbers that made him a 5 time All Star playing in the NL with the Colorado Rockies. His double play partner at 2B Devon Travis begins his second season in the majors and had a .301 BA in 2016 and the team looks for great things from him for years to come. The rock solid Russell Martin returns for another season behind the plate after a 2016 where his BA dipped to .231 but hit 20 HR’s and drove in 74 runs. He is among the best defensive catchers and pitchers who have worked with him all have nothing but praise for his game managing skills. Jose Bautista will continue on in RF and hopes to improve his numbers in 2017 and if he is able to do so will likely test the free agent market once again? His production numbers were down in all categories in 2016 which explains the lack of interest of other teams when he declared himself a free agent. At 36 Bautista is clearly on the back end of his career but is known for his prodigious HR’s that always ignite the home crowd. The pitching staff features an extremely deep bullpen led by RH closer Roberto Osuna who in 2016, his rookie year, registered 36 saves on 72 appearances and had an ultra low WHIP of 0.93. Only 22 years old the Jays have themselves a rising star in their bullpen. On the opposite side of the age line is 40 year old RH Jason Grilli who will likely be one of the set up men for Osuna, along with the newly acquired LH J.P.Howell. RH starter Aaron Sanchez started 30 games in 2016 posting a 15-2 record and an ERA of .300. The opening day starter is yet to be announced but Sanchez is the early favorite to get the assignment?  J.A. Happ is the LH arm in the rotation and he comes off a career season going 20-4 with a 3.18 ERA over his 32 starts and was a big contributor to the Jays run to the ALCS. 2017 will be another season where the Blue Jays are realistic contenders to win the World Series and Captain Tickets’ no fees value seating will ensure you won’t miss any of the action.
