The New York Mets

2017 | Written by David Brodeur

The 2017 New York Met's come into the season with what is arguably the best pitching staff in the NL, top to bottom. It has been the cornerstone of the team's playoff appearances, including an NL pennant in 2015 but has been unable to deliver a World Series title. This year's team is optimistic that there are all the ingredients to deliver them to the promised land? The dynamite staff is led by RH Noah Syndergaard who frequently has the juggs gun registering 98+mph along with a 2/4 curve ball, a cut slider that combines wicked movement and spin and the split finger change that arrives to the plate in the low 80mph range. That variant between his top speed pitch and his low speed pitch is why he is a Cy Young candidate once again this season. And what the Met's love about him is he's only 24 years old. He was named to his first All Star team in 2016 and posted a 2.60 ERA with 218 SO's and a WHIP of 1.15. Beginning only his 3rd major league season, it's all upside for him and the Met's. Immediately behind him is RH Jacob deGrom who looks to bounce back to the form that earned him Rookie of the Year in 2014. He finished last season on the DL and had to have minor elbow surgery to repair tendon damage but is expected to make a full recovery and be ready for the start of the season. His spring training debut went smoothly and he had no pain afterwards. The # 3 starter is the unlucky or injury prone, depending on which school of thought you are a member of, Matt Harvey. When healthy he has proven to be among the elite pitchers in the league. Trouble has been keeping him healthy. He had Tommy John surgery in 2014 and missed a portion off the 2015 season while recovering from the surgery. Then he developed a rare condition known as thoracic outlet syndrome where the remedy is the removal of one rib to ease the compression of nerves or blood vessels between the collarbone and rib cage. Though rare among regular folks, it is somewhat common among pitchers and is a procedure where full recovery is almost guaranteed. His rehab from the surgery is right on course to this point and he says he's feeling great. A return to his winning form makes an already potent rotation an intimidating force for the other teams around the league. Almost an afterthought is # 4 starter LH Steven Matz who at 25 years old presents the Met's with yet another young arm with tons of upside. The final spot in the rotation will most likely go to Seth Lugo who was placed into the rotation late in the 2016 season due to injuries to others and made a contribution to the Mets NL Wild Card appearance. The bullpen is led by hard throwing RH Jeurys Familia who was named to last seasons All Star team for the first time and finished the season with a whooping 51 saves!! With the starters likely pitching deep into games Familia's presence in the pen will help this team go deep into the playoff race.

The Met's offense leans on slugger Yoenis Cespedes who cracked 31 HR's while driving in 86 runs and posted an OB%of .354 in 2016. He anchors an outfield that includes the speedy CF Curtis Granderson who can be effective in the lead off or # 2 spot in the lineup with his speed being an asset on the bases. Though posting only a .237 BA in 2016 he showed much welcomed pop with his bat slugging 30 HR's last season. His versatility in both the field and at the plate make him a key player in the Met's success for 2017. RF Jay Bruce starting his second season with the team hopes to find the form that prompted the Met's to trade for him from the Cincinnati Reds in the 2015 offseason. The infield is solid and has players who the team can depend on producing around 20 HR's and 60 RBI'S along with top ten fielding percentages. The one player who will be watched closely is 3B David Wright who has suffered multiple injuries that has seen him play in only 75 games over the past two seasons. There was first a herniated disk in his back that required surgery and then during rehab from that he was diagnosed with spinal stenosis. Two serious conditions that by no means guarantee Wright or the team he can return to the field at all, let alone return to his 7 time All Star form?? The team avoided arbitration with starting C Travis d'Arnaud signing him to a one year $1.875 million dollar contract despite the fact he spent two months on the DL in 2016 with rotator cuff issues. He finished the 2015 season on a tear at the plate but dropped off significantly in 2016 with the injury and time off while on the DL likely contributing to the falling numbers? His play prior to the injury showed he could be productive at the major league level and this being a contract year for him an uptick in production is likely and would give the Met's a much needed addition to its offense.
