The Boston Red Sox

2017 | Written by David Brodeur

The Boston Red Sox will have to find a way to get along without an all time great with the retirement of David Ortiz. Affectionately known to his many fans as Big Papi, Ortiz terrorized opponents wearing the Red Sox uniform from 2003 all the way to the conclusion of 2016 where he had one of the finest seasons of his storied career. In fact 2016 was such a stellar year for him many in the media speculated that he might change his mind and return for another season with the Sox? Alas that was not to be and the Red Sox will sorely miss his leadership, his connection with the fans and of course his prolific power hitting and clutch performances in the post season. In 2016 Ortiz hit .315, slugged 38 HR's and drove in 127 runs with a gaudy OB% of .401! The team knows full well that there will be no replacing him and can only hope a collective of players can produce his numbers? The off season was a busy one with the Boston Red Sox making moves to strengthen their minor league farm system in a big way that should keep the cupboard well stocked for the future. The Red Sox traded for LHP Chris Sale from the Chicago White Sox sending 4 players to the Sox in the exchange. Sale, the 5 time All Star had some stellar seasons for the Sox and was second in the Cy Young voting in 2015. RHP Tyler Thornburg was acquired in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers for 3 players and another to be named later. These two will be a big boost to the team's staff and Sale could end up being the # 2 starter now that the team has announced that David Price will begin the 2017 season on the DL. Losing Price to injury to begin the season for an unknown period of time with an unspecified injury to his left elbow and forearm will deal the Sox a huge blow to not only the rotation but to the overall success of the team in 2017. The Boston Red Sox also signed free agent 1B Mitch Moreland who can also DH. There is only one Fenway Park and seeing a game there is definitely a bucket list item for any true baseball fan. The pitching staff is led by reigning Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello who was 22-4 with a 3.15 ERA over 33 starts while amassing 223 innings pitched and 189 SO's. He will be given the opening day start. The # 3 spot in the rotation will go to veteran RH knuckleballer Steven Wright who had to be shut down for the remainder of 2016 in August due to a shoulder issue that did not require off season surgery. He has thrown a limited number of innings so far in spring training but has reported no discomfort in the shoulder and manager John Farrell likes what he's seen so far. Two lefties Eduardo Rodriguez and Drew Pomeranz will battle to earn the #s 4 and 5 spots in the rotation until Price returns from injury. If Price’s injury requires surgery to correct causing him to miss the entire 2017 season that will make the $219 million dollar contract the team signed him to in 2016 lose all its value, especially if after he makes his comeback he is not the pitcher he was prior to the injury. So much rides on Price and the severity of his injury. The bullpen is deep and led by closer RH Craig Kimbrel who appeared in 57 games and notched 31 saves. The offense has plenty of firepower despite the loss of Ortiz starting with RF Mookie Betts who had a huge year in 2016 hitting .318 with 31 HR's, 113 RBI's and 26 SB's in just his 2nd full season in the majors. Only 24 he is the one player that can help ease the loss of Ortiz. 2008 AL MVP and 4 time All Star 2B Dustin Pedroia will no longer have to share the face of the franchise with Ortiz and will continue to put up productive stats along with his 4 time Gold Glove fielding prowess. His double play partner at SS Xander Bogaerts put up impressive numbers in 2016 hitting .294, 21 HR's, 89 RBI's,13 SB's and an OB% of .356. The team welcomes the return of 3B Pablo Sandoval who missed nearly all of 2016 when he had surgery to repair his right shoulder in May and was lost for the rest of the season. He only made 7 plate appearances in 2016. This Boston team is loaded with talent on the mound and at the plate to be a serious threat to win the World Series in 2017 and Captain Ticket is your best and only no fees source for the best value priced tickets in town.

BOSTON RED SOX HISTORY

The team was founded 1901 as one of the American League’s eight charter franchises. The team began playing at Fenway Park in 1912 and has continued to play there ever since. The team name Red Sox was a takeoff from another Boston team named the Boston Red Stockings who would later become the Boston Braves and then the Milwaukee Braves and finally the Atlanta Braves. The Sox won the first World Series defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates and went on to win four more World Series by 1918. Two years after the 1918 championship the team’s owner in debt from a failed Broadway production he had funded traded the greatest player of all time, Babe Ruth to their rivals the New York Yankees. That was the beginning of an 86 year drought of not winning the World Series for the Sox that became to be known as the “Curse of the Bambino” One of Ruth’s many nicknames those days was the Bambino and when he was traded there was so much fan hatred for the Red Sox owner, including from Ruth himself who did not want to be or understand why he had been traded? Not until the 2004 season were the Boston Red Sox able to finally shake the Curse of the Bambino and went on to win two more World Series after that first one.

Fenway Park has been the home to the Red Sox since 1912 and is far and away the oldest ballpark in the majors. It’s unique configuration and the famous “green wall” make it an icon in MLB’s history. With all the modern stadiums featuring luxury boxes and corporate amenities one has to wonder how much longer the Red Sox will continue to play at Fenway. The fans are loyal as hound dogs and more like rabid dogs when the hated rival Yankees come to town. With only a little more than 30,000 seats in Fenway Park it creates an intimate feeling like no other park and the fans reverence for all the greats who have played there make attending games there bucket list material for the true baseball fan. Captain Ticket can put you in the very best locations at Fenway for any game with value priced, no fees tickets.

FAN FUN FACTS

The Boston Red Sox are owned by Fenway Sports Group which also owns Liverpool F.C.of the English Premier league. The team is always one of the top road attractions around the league with fans in every city in the league. Neil Diamond’s classic song Sweet Caroline has become the team’s anthem. After being known as the Red Stockings the team officially took the name Braves and became the Boston Braves in 1912. The trade that sent Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees is thought to be the the origin of the “hate” in the rivalry between the two teams and it has and will remain that way forever and can be considered the longest standing rivalry in American sports history. Ted Williams, the last player to finish a season with a batting average above .400, was a Red Sox for his entire 20+ year career and is considered by most fans to be the greatest Red Sox of all time.
