About The Los Angeles Chargers

2015 (revised in 2017) | Written by Mark Anthony Smith

The Los Angeles Chargers have surprised many around the NFL this year, except for its loyal fan base. Philip Rivers has been one of the most dominating quarterbacks in the NFL for the past few seasons. No matter the odds, the Chargers seem to always come through with a win. With over a 100.00 Rating, throwing for 3,000 yards, and looking to throw over 30 touchdowns this 2014 season… Rivers looks to have another Pro Bowl Season. But his most desired goal this year is to lead the Chargers to a Super Bowl bid. The Chargers may not be on top of the AFC, but typically it is a team like the LA Chargers that seem to make it far in the playoffs. With weapons like Tight End future hall of famer, Antonio Gates, who is one of the league leading leaders in touchdowns! What a surprise? Not really! He usually is on top of the NFL in scoring. Rivers and Gates have been one of the most exciting pass and catch duos of the NFL for the past few seasons! Rivers is also loaded with more receiving weapons. Even with the loss of Eddie Royal, Malcolm Floyd and Keenan Allen are enough to keep this offense rolling! This thrilling air attack of the Chargers is guaranteed to put on a great show for its fans.

The Chargers defense is no joke either. With tough players like Brandon Flowers, Eric Weddle and recent Heisman Trophy winner Manti Te’o, who is beginning to make his mark in the NFL after a controversial and emotional rookie season… strait out of Norte Dame. With second year Corner Back Jason Verrett, the Chargers secondary is expected to be one of the best! Although, the Super Chargers are known for their high flying air attack offense, their defense has managed to be one of the best. In the middle of a tough division featuring the Denver Broncos, led by Payton Manning. The always competitive Kansas City Chargers, led by football coaching great Andy Reid. The Chargers still seem to be on top on all fields of play. With an always difficult task of passing up the Broncos and the Chiefs, the Chargers are looking good with high hopes of making the post season. Chargers have an extremely competitive and entertaining schedule this season! So contact CAPTAIN TICKET, because they are your way into amazing NFL action!

Most NFL teams don’t have such a long history without a Super Bowl win, like the Chargers. They’ve made their one and only NFL Super Bowl in the 1994 season. The Chargers began as an AFL team in 1960, spending one season in Los Angeles, and moved to San Diego in 1961 (starting in the 2018 season, they're back in LA). For almost ten years the Chargers played for the AFL until the merger began in 1970. The Chargers were placed in the AFC West. In their early years in the NFL, the Chargers did not find much success, but would later become one of the most exciting teams in the NFL, once they were controlled by Don Coryell, who would inspire the Chargers nickname of ‘Air Coryell’. An offense controlled by quarterback great, Dan Fouts. Fouts would have great passing weapons to throw to such as Charlie Joyner, John Jefferson, and hall of fame tight end Kellen Winslow. Although, ‘Air Coryell’ would thrive in the NFL, they never quite made the Super Bowl with Fouts at quarterback.

The chargers would impress again in 1994, when they made their one and only Super Bowl. In 1994, the Chargers would dominate the AFC. Led by veteran quarterback Stan Humphries, Wide Receiver Tony Martin, and hard hitting running back Natron Means. But it’s the defense that made this team stand out. Leslie O’neal was one of the most fearsome Defensive ends. Reuben Davis and Shawn Lee clogged the hole like no other D-line. Then there is the late, great, Junior Seau. Seau was not only a notable name in Southern California as a USC Trojan stand out, and LA Charger great, but he is also known as one of the greatest Linebackers to ever put on the pads and step on the field. The Chargers didn’t win a Super Bowl, and were embarrassed as they faced off against Steve Young and the San Francisco 49ers. But a great and memorable season indeed.

They would never get to the championship again. With a close run later in 2006, when led by the great LaDainian Tomlinson. In 2007, Tomlinson would dominate the NFL and lead the Chargers to one of the most talked about games against the New England Patriots. The Chargers would be upset on their own field and the finish led to a controversial game ending in which the Charger’s Qualcomm field was disrespected by Patriots players, who couldn’t be happy with just a win. Tomlinson attacked the inappropriate player celebration on the Qualcomm logo. Just like the many fans, Tomlinson showed his loyalty and honor of wearing the Charger Blue.

Charger fans are found everywhere. Especially in Southern California, and all along the west coast. With a large void in the Los Angeles area, football fans of L.A. flock to Qualcomm Stadium to not only catch the LA Chargers, but to catch all and any NFL teams Every year the Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos head to LA to plau some exciting AFC West battles. You’ll also catch lots of 49er fans, Rams fans of old, and even great AFC teams such as the Pittsburgh Steelers and Indianapolis Colts. Fans all around the NFL, have no trouble finding reasons to flock to and witness the Bolts knock down their opponents. Qualcomm Stadium is also a great place to tail gate before football action. Fans always have a great time and are very friendly with each other.

Norv Turner, was hired as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers in 2007 and took them to their first playoff run since 1994. But, Turner has another connection to the team. Known as an offensive genius, Turner learned his offensive knowledge from the great Ernie Zampese when they coached together earlier in his career. Where the Charger connection comes is Zampese learned his football stuff from Don Coryell, who also led the Chargers to a playoff season, known as the ‘Air Coryell’ era.
