The Atlanta Braves

2017 | Written by David Brodeur

The Atlanta Braves 2017 squad looks to flee the cellar of the NL East and make significant strides in ,becoming contenders sooner than later. Like any ball club that has fallen on tough times, a rebuilding process becomes a necessity and the Braves are no different in that category. There are many holes to be filled but there is good news in that the team has plenty of young prospects with the potential to be successful major league players. However, potential does not make a successful player or team for that matter and the 2017 season figures to be one filled with growing pains, disappointments, pleasant surprises and complete unknowns in spring training stepping up and realizing their full potential!? All that and more will be part of this upcoming season for the once dominant team in the NL East, the Braves. The off season saw the Braves making a large number of transactions most reassignments to their farm system but they did sign three players of note who will make an impact in 2017. The team brought back fan and around the league favorite RHP Bartolo Colon who at 43 and a rotund 285 lbs. can still get hitters out and can add a little pop from his own bat as well. Another pitcher added was knuckleballer R.H. Dickey and if he can get his knuckle ball under control for strikes he can be an effective starter. The final key signing is C Kurt Suzuki who is hitting .375 in spring training and has impressed the Braves brass with his command behind the plate and the way he interacts with the pitching staff. He will compete with injury prone Tyler Flowers for the starting role after the team initially looked at Suzuki as the team's back up for 2017. The team also acquired 2B Brandon Phillips from the Cincinnati Reds and he will provide veteran leadership in the clubhouse along with solidifying the middle infield. Phillips will also help in the development of rookie SS prospect Dansby Swanson who has been bothered with a sore back this spring prompting the team to take a cautious approach with his playing time so far. Swanson made his major league debut in August of 2016 and finished the season batting .302 with 3 HR's, 17 RBI's, 20 runs scored and 3 stolen bases. He is expected to get back into action some time this week. The Braves will be a team that will play hard every game and you can see the games with one call to Captain Ticket.

Colon joins a pitching staff that includes RH Julio Teheran who managed 30 starts in 2016 with a good 3.21 ERA and 188 innings pitched. LH veteran Jaime Garcia had 30 starts in 2016 but needs to lower is high era (4.67) to maintain his spot in the 5 man rotation.Mike Foltynewicz RH 25 year old posted a 9-5 record last season with 22 starts also will need to lower his ERA but will battle for the # 5 spot in the rotation. The bullpen is deep and is packed with lefties. The closer returning from 2016 is Jim Johnson who had 20 saves but a poor 2-6 record. Also registering saves in the bullpen last season was RH Arodys Vizcaino and he will be ready to take over the closer's spot should Johnson falter? LH Ian Krol had a productive 2016 in limited chances. Another LHer who showed promise in 2016 is Paco Rodriguez who posted a stingy 1.45 ERA along with an impressive 0.97 WHIP. The team will look to 1B Freddie Freeman to repeat his productive 2016 where he hit .302 with 34 HR's and 91 RBI's and a lofty OB% of .400. Veteran Matt Kemp posted stellar numbers in 2016 playing for both the San Diego Padres and finishing the season with the Braves. His combined stats line were a .268 BA while cranking out 35 HR's and a big 108 RBI's! The Braves will look to Kemp and Freeman to carry the offensive load in 2017. ATLANTA BRAVES HISTORY

The Atlanta Braves actually started out as the Boston Red Stockings in the 1870’s and holds the distinction of being the only team in the majors to have fielded a team every season since baseball’s existence. That fact also makes them the oldest sports franchise in the history of America. After the team left Boston due to a declining fan base they arrived in Milwaukee and became the Milwaukee Braves in 1953 where they remained until once again a lack of fan support forced ownership to move the club again. So in 1966 the team became the Atlanta Braves. While in both Milwaukee and Atlanta the Braves had one of the all time great major leaguers in Henry Aaron. Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s career HR record as an Atlanta Brave when he slammed # 715 over the left field fence off of Dodgers LH pitcher Al Downing, April 8th 1974. The team won the World Series in 1957 as the Milwaukee Braves and Aaron was named NL MVP that season. They won the NL pennant the following season only to lose to the New York Yankees in the World Series in 7 games.

Initially the move to Atlanta was halted due to a court order in 1965 but the following season they arrived in Atlanta. In 1969 the league broke up teams into divisions and the Atlanta Braves were placed in the NL West and they promptly won the division but were swept 3-0 by the Miracle Mets. 1975 saw the team purchased by CNN founder and billionaire Ted Turner. 1991 was an award filled season that fell one win short of winning the World Series. The franchise set an attendance record putting 2,140,217 fans in the stadium and set the team record for wins in a season with 94. While LHP Tom Glavine won the Cy Young Award and switch hitting Terry Pendleton won the NL batting crown and league MVP with manager Bobby Cox being named manager of the year. In the next 2 seasons they would break their season win total record with 98 in 1992 and 104 in 1993 and were the first team to capture 3 consecutive NL West division crowns. However, they were bounced from the playoffs in 93 by the Philadelphia Phillies. They appeared to be on track for another World Series bid in 1994 when the baseball strike cancelled the playing of the World Series.

Finally in 1995 they broke the frustration to win the World Series. Then in 1996 they would make their 4th trip to the World Series in the past 5 seasons only to be denied repeating as champs, losing to the Yankees. The Atlanta Braves won an incredible 16 consecutive division crowns with the streak finally ending in 2006, a record likely to never be broken. The Braves still play an exciting brand of baseball and you can get tickets to all games in all locations without paying fees when you use Captain Ticket for your ticket needs.

During the time they were the dominant team in the National League they establish a devoted and loyal fan base that extended far beyond  the city of Atlanta. They adopted the war cry of the Florida State Seminoles Football team that took hold around the country and would resonate loudly in every stadium. They truly had fans in every city and in some ballparks the Braves fans would be louder than the home team’s fans. The stadium was sold out every game for almost the entire 16 seasons they were division champs and owner Ted Turner made it a festive place to see a game at and was constantly having various promotional gift items given to the fans in appreciation for their devotion to the team. The team’s success created fan unity that brought people together rich, poor, black, white all rooting for a common cause. The Atlanta Braves!! All the tickets for all the games you will ever need are yours when you call Captain Ticket, where you are never charged fees on your purchase.

FAN FUN FACTS

The great Babe Ruth finished his career as a Brave when the team was still in Boston. In 1919 the immortal Jim Thorpe joined the club but only played for one season. For 5 years beginning in 1936 due to a fan poll the team’s name was changed to the Bee’s with their field being called the Bee Hive. In 1941 the team took its former name back and became the Braves again. The Braves first season in Milwaukee, 1953, they set a major league attendance record with 1,826,297 fans filling County Stadium. In 1963 superstar Henry Aaron narrowly missed winning the triple crown leading the league in HR’s with 44 and RBI’s with 130. In 1997 team owner Ted Turner took over as manager during a 17 game losing streak but it only lasted for one game due to Commissioner Bowie Kuhn demanding Turner return to the team’s front office. He lost his only game at the helm on the road 2-1 to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
