NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES HISTORY:

Dated back to 1949, NASCAR which stands for National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing has been the top racing series in the United States! And around the World! Known initially as the Strictly Stock Series in 1949, the 65 year history sport has gone through many name changes. After its first year in the books and with crowned champion Red Byron, Strictly Stock Series came to an end. For twenty years, from 1950-1970, the series went through their first long Grand National Series era. With hopes to have more of a professional reputation, the GN blossomed in its 20 year run. But the Winston Cup is when Stock Car racing really came into popular demand. As the premiere stock car racing Grand National was changed to The Winston Cup in 1971, the Winston Cup would keep its name for over thirty years. The Winston also earned its first full televised race from first flag to last flag in 1979 on CBS for the Daytona 500! Richard Petty won that famous exciting series after an intense crash between racers Donnie Allison and Cale Yarborough. This collision led to a fist fight and there you go…. NASCAR at its best! Cars crashing, wheels spinning and fists flying!

The sport hasn't lost that touch since. A wild run wrecking time is the reputation that NASCAR has built! During the era of the Winston Cup, driver heroes were born throughout the 1980’s and 90’s. A few household names such as Dale Jarrett, Bill Elliot, and Jeff Gordon were a few drivers to bring NASCAR to world fame. In 2003, NASCAR switched to NEXTAL after their transition away from The WINSTON CUP. As stock car racing’s next road to a NEXTAL cup, NASCAR’S ratings seemed to take a fall. Due to old school fans negative reaction to NASCAR’S new commercialism, fans seem to lose interest around the merger between SPRINT and NEXTAL. As SPRINT took over NASCAR, a new system was created known as the “CHASE FOR THE CUP.” Since 2004, there have been five winners. The first cup winner in the Chase was Kurt Busch, followed by Tony Stewart. Jimmie Johnson would take over NASCAR wins with five consecutive years of dominance. Toney Stewart would break the streak in 2011, leaving three more trophies belonging to Brad Keselowski, Jimmie Johnson one more time and the last cup went to Kevin Harvick… leaving a total of five winners in eleven years. NASCAR FUN FACTS:

In plans to create a race car animated film for PIXAR FILMS, Director John Lassiter researched stock car racing in 2001. In his quest to find inspiration for his film based on stock car racing, Lassiter met a NASCAR fanatic nicknamed ‘Mater’. They met at a Lowe’s Speedway, up on a hill formed land of grass at the speedway known as “Redneck Hill”. Lassiter saw ‘Mater’ as a great example of what NASCAR friends are, light hearted, passionate fans. Lassiter hit it off with the NASCAR fan right away. Their meeting led to Lassiter’s inspiration for what we all know as Larry ‘The Cable Guy’s’ famous character in the 2006 Cars film Mater, the tow truck. Mater quickly became a world famous character in the film Cars. The film Cars also takes from the SPRINT CUP and refers to its championship as the PISTON CUP.
